Everything is not what it seems in Everett Kennedy Brown captivating photographic series on Japan’s samurai. While Brown’s photographs look like artifacts from the warriors’ feudal-period heyday, they document the unique fashions and aesthetic of modern-day samurai.

Kennedy Brown continues to reflect the ancient layers of Japan (Old Layer) using the classic photographic technique of "wet plate light painting". The images, which are burned onto a single glass negative, emerge with unique shadows, similar to a single lifetime encounter. The "Japanese Samurai Fashion" series is based on "Nomaoi," a festival that has been handed down for approximately 800 years in the Soma region of Fukushima Prefecture.
