French Bistro Table with Original Wood Top 19th Century
A classic bistro table from the 19th century with an old wood top supported by wrought Iron legs.
The provenance of this table is so wonderful for anyone interested in fashion. The table came from the Paris apartment of Frances Stein (1937-2021) and was used by her daily.
Frances Stein an American, born on Long Island who attended Smith College and one of the lesser known designers who worked with Halston and Calvin Klein before joining Chanel in 1982. .After the death of Coco Chanel in 1971, the brand suffered a massive decline in reputation and sales. Stein was brought in to breathe new life into the brand. She designed the cashmere pieces, re-imagined the classic handbags, fashion jewelry, and the iconic ballet flat. All of which boosted the company’s popularity and saved it from potential ruin. Though little credit has ever been given, as lead designer for Chanel accessories from the 1980s to the beginning of the 2000s,
Stein’s designs — classic Chanel ballet flats, gold chain bags and everything you think of that is Chanel — were “major bottom-line successes,” which made Karl Lagerfeld so jealous that he started his own accessories studio within Chanel but still her designs outperformed his.
“I adore what I do…but I am a loner and I know I have a reputation for being difficult. This disturbs me, because most people who have worked with me know how hard I work at what I do. I’m a perfectionist.”
