An Exceptional ebony macassar and parcel-gilt circular table by Axel Einar Hjorth for Nordiska Kompaniet, circa 1928.

The sunburst top is of matched ebony macassar with a stepped fashion edge, supported by three carved parcel gilt palm shaped legs with black lacquer to the inside, sitting on an an angled triangular macassar base, with square black lacquered feet.

This refined table from the Louis collection represents Hjorth at the height of his career. Hjorth displayed pieces from the Louis and Ceasar collections at the seminal 1929 Barcelona International Exposition.

Three stamped metal tags to the underside of top reading, NK, made in Sweden serial number R35958 C13476.

"Axel Einar Hjorth (1888-1959) was a leading Swedish designer of the first half of the twentieth century. Hjorth was instrumental in introducing Swedish decorative arts to America, exhibiting his works together with those of Carl Hörvik and Carl Malmsten at the Metropolitan Museum in New York, 1927. Between 1926-1938, Hjorth worked as chief designer and architect for the Nordiska Kompaniet."
