Early 20th Century Senufo Sculpture of Two Birds

US$2,400.00

A wooden sculpture of two stylised black and white casqued Hornbill, originating from the Senufo people of the Ivory coast, Mali, and Burkina Faso. The circular base suggests this may have been the lid of a larger ceremonial pot rather than a personal-use vessel, and given the elaborate carvings, the container would have been used to store sacred relics, medicines, or offerings.
Early 20th Century

Senufo people venerate the Hornbill as one of their five primordial creatures and this example of paired birds facing each other symbolises unity, knowledge and the transmission of wisdom from one generation to another.

Dimensions:
Height: 17.13 in (43.5 cm)
Width: 11.03 in (28 cm)
Depth: 11.03 in (28 cm)

Location:
Shoredtich, London
