540.00

First edition, soft cover, published by Contrejour, 1st edition 1984.

This incredibly important and beautifully designed publication presents a photo essay built up of photographs taken by Peress in Iran during a five-week period, between 1979-1980. Telex Iran chronicles the crisis in United States-Iran relations in late 1979-early 1980 when militant Iranian students seized the American Embassy and held its inhabitants hostage. Peress’ book is oversized, graphically bold and provides numerous perspectives on an extremely sensitive political problem Along with reportage of major political events, Peress’ pictures record mundane spaces, places, people and moments of Iranian life in order to emphasize the incomprehensibility and confusion of the environment before his eyes. The images are fueled with emotion; sometimes pain, sometimes laughter. We get an insight in to Peress’ experience through brief records of his correspondence that accompany the images.
