Renaissance Swiss Bankers or Merchants Table, circa 1580

Very rare Renaissance merchant's table from the late 16th century. A beautiful table decorated with carved foliate roundels and mitred trim of walnut. This table has an exceptionally nice form and color. The sliding top opening to a large compartment with 7 small drawers, it also has a great iron lock.

This table has been modified over its lifetime with additions during the 17th or 18th centuries and some later adaptations.

A cleverly designed piece of furniture that was used originally by the worlds first bankers to discreetly exchange currencies between bankers and their clients. The sliding top made for a counter but also an extra element of security so the banker to protect himself from seated clientele.

Dimensions: H 78 cm x W 118 cm x D 90 cm

CONDITION: Good overall condition with old restorations, losses, minor anomalies and traces of old wood worm.. This table has had a long working life.
